THE ART OF MODERATING CHURCH WORSHIP

(How to Moderate Church Worship)

Here's a comprehensive professional guide to help you better understand what worship moderation is, the role of the moderator, and how to become a successful professional moderator. Follow the 20 key steps I teach you in this special lesson on "THE ART OF MODERATING WORSHIP." This course will teach you step-by-step how to moderate worship in church, from preparation to service.

HOW DOES WORSHIP TAKE PLACE?

Worship is the meeting place between God and His people.

WHAT IS THE PLACE WHERE CHRISTIANS MEET CALLED?

The place where the faithful meet is called a parish in English. In another modern language, it is called the Church.

I am not talking about the Church, according to the etymology of the Greek word meaning "ecclesia," which designates the whole of the redeemed, set apart, or consecrated to God. But here, I am talking about the Church, the building where Christians gather each week to worship, pray, listen to God, and offer their gifts.

THE STAGES OF WORSHIP IN CHURCH

When Christians gather together, the service begins with a word of welcome from the congregation, followed by a greeting, and then a time of prayer and praise to God. Then comes the time of preaching, then prayer, then the offering and announcements, and ends with the closing prayer, often given by the senior pastor, who is like the father of a family who must bless his children. During this service.

WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE PERSON WHO LEADS WORSHIP IN THE CHURCH?

The person who usually leads worship in church is called the moderator. Their responsibility is to ensure that everything runs according to God's perfect plan.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO MODERATE WORSHIP?

In this teaching, I teach you that there are two ways to understand what it means to moderate worship in the Church? Or to be a moderator in the Church. I first attempt to define it from the origin of the word "moderate," and then I define it from a prophetic, practical, and spiritual perspective.

A) ETYMOLOGICALLY

Moderating worship means directing, balancing, guiding, and orienting the service in the right direction, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, while respecting its purpose and nature.

B) PROPHETICALLY

Leading worship involves helping or guiding the congregation to feel God's presence and celebrate it through hymns, praise, and prayer. It also involves creating an atmosphere conducive to hearing God's voice during these moments of worship, which requires great flexibility on the part of worship leaders, in response to God's Spirit.

It is important to understand that leading worship is a great challenge, and to do it well, one must possess a strong spiritual capacity, as well as the grace to be used by the Holy Spirit.

For worship leaders have the mission, during their service, to facilitate this spiritual communion between God and His people. This is why only those who are truly called by God are endowed with this capacity. This is why not everyone can lead worship.

ATTENTION:

To lead a worship service well, you must know what type of worship you are leading, because each service is different and requires a specific way of leading it.

You cannot lead a wedding service in the same way as a Sunday service, just as you cannot lead an intercessory service in the same way as a Bible study service. A good moderator is one who is able to make all these distinctions in their mind.

HERE ARE 20 KEY STEPS TO MASTERING THE ART OF WORSHIP MODERATION:

This manual is designed to help you improve your leadership in worship. By learning and practicing these 20 key steps, you will undoubtedly improve your leadership in worship.

1. KNOW THE NATURE AND PURPOSE OF THE SERVICE:

A) NATURE OR TYPE OF WORSHIP:

Knowing the nature of the service involves knowing what type of service you will be leading: a Sunday service, an intercessory service, or a wedding service, as each service has a specific purpose. Therefore, it is essential to know the nature of the service you are tasked with leading before beginning the moderation process, as your preparation will depend on it.

B) THE OBJECTIVES OR VISION OF THE SERVICE:

Secondly, as the moderator of the day, it is important to know the objective or vision of the day. This avoids any confusion and allows you to focus on the essentials during the service.

Anyone wishing to moderate a service should know that every service, regardless of its nature, has two objectives. At the end of each service, these objectives must be achieved, which will determine its success.

The two main objectives of a service are: first, there is what I call the primary objective, or the overall purpose of the service, which is generally to worship God; then comes the secondary objective, which is what one wishes to accomplish at the end of the service. This is often linked to the vision of the day.

I emphasize here that the success of a service does not depend on the number of participants or the setting, but on achieving the objectives of the day or service, in accordance with the vision of the day and God's perfect will.

2. PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP:

Every moderator or servant should know that preparation is essential in everything we do for God. It helps us approach our task correctly and avoid certain mistakes during worship, and good preparation allows us to fulfill our responsibilities brilliantly.

For good moderation, three important preparation steps must be followed. The moderator must therefore prepare in these three dimensions: spiritual preparation, physical preparation, and emotional preparation.

A) SPIRITUAL PREPARATION:

Spiritual preparation is achieved through prayer and meditation on the Word, and sometimes even through fasting. It then continues with maintaining good spiritual health and an excellent relationship with God, fully devoting one's body, soul, and spirit to God, thus becoming an instrument of the Holy Spirit within one's local community.

B) MATERIAL PREPARATION:

The second stage of preparation is material and focuses more on personal preparation. You must be well-presented, clean, that is, feel good, and dress respectfully to avoid the scandals of the day.

Note:

Being dirty and unkempt can distract the audience and prevent people from listening to you. Because your appearance can influence your acceptance or rejection, you must consider your physical appearance, as it is very important. During worship, always be clean, perfumed, and well-dressed. Above all, stay in a good mood.

C) EMOTIONAL PREPARATION

Always prepare yourself emotionally before worship. This is very important so that you don't share your sadness with others, but rather share God's joy. This strengthens the believer, because it is written that God's joy is our strength. Joy during worship represents God's power over our problems, and it also represents His love for us. To be joyful is to be positive, reassured, and have faith in God despite everything. And one of your responsibilities as a moderator of worship is to bring this joy to desperate souls.

God's work is comparable to that of those who greet people on airplanes or in restaurants. Whatever their personal problems, their work requires them to smile and remain cheerful during their working hours, for they represent their company.

Likewise, those who serve God in positions of leadership and religious service must learn and develop the ability to forget themselves and their problems at times in order to bring joy and good humor to others during worship. This may sound hypocritical, but it is, in a way, a way of sacrificing oneself for the happiness of others.

For those who are raised to dignity in the Church do not come to church to express their problems to the faithful; they come above all to support and help those in need. This is how God, who sees our heart and our dedication to his work, will solve our hidden problems.

Being emotionally ready for ministry means being willing to put aside your problems, worries, and concerns to focus solely on the success of God's work. From the moment you appear before God's people, you should appear calm, with a beautiful smile and a cheerful attitude, thus transmitting this warmth to the congregation.

Whatever your challenges, when you serve, you must strive to bring positive energy and a joyful attitude. You must also be able to convey your faith and joy to those who are in despair so that they can find joy in God during worship. This is what it means to be a servant of God.

3. DURING WORSHIP, FOCUS ON GOD, NOT YOURSELF:

Do your best to make God's people understand that we are here for God. Therefore, the most important person is God, not you! It's about speaking about God, speaking for God. Not about yourself. Don't let the congregation focus on you. That's why you must dress simply and respectfully so that people don't focus on you, but on God.

Know that personality worship is considered idolatry in the Bible, and that all idolatry is a great sin before God; so, during worship, avoid having people mistake you for God. And if you wish to appreciate people or their work during worship, do so with greater simplicity and modesty, because God does not like us to give up his place to others; he is a jealous God, says the Bible.

4. DON'T COME TO IMPRESS PEOPLE:

During worship, be simple in your language and watch your words. Clothe yourself in humility and serve worthily, with love and zeal. Avoid speaking arrogantly. Above all, don't come to show off your intelligence, your good French or English, or even your fine clothes. Remember that God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

5. THE FIRST WORDS ARE VERY IMPORTANT:

From the introduction of the service: Pay particular attention to the first words you say at the beginning of the service: they set the tone for the rest of the service. As a tip, make sure the first words focus the congregation's attention on God, not on you.

What are the first words of worship?

Hello everyone, and welcome to Freedom House Church! As we gather for worship today, let us remember that we are in the presence of Almighty God. Jesus assures us in Matthew 18:20: "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."

6. PREPARE THE WORSHIP IN COLLABORATION WITH THE PREACHER AND THE MUSIC TEAM: Make a habit of preparing the service in collaboration with the preacher and the music team so that the work is harmonious and not chaotic. The strength of a successful service lies in teamwork, not individualism.

Example: If the sermon encourages trust in God in difficult times, help the congregation understand that God is a refuge. The transition between singing and preaching can also be made through the lyrics of selected songs, prayer requests, or a testimony during the service. The goal is to allow the congregation to immerse themselves in a theme that develops throughout the service, so that they leave with a strong overall idea at the end.

7. OBSERVE THE OVERALL VISION OF THE SERVICE:

From the very beginning of the service, the leader must have in mind the overall vision of the service. He or she must clearly know where to begin and where to end, what the objectives and vision for the day are. He or she must also be well informed about the nature of the service, its external and internal format.

He or she must be aware that the challenge of moderation is to develop this overall vision of the service. The biblical texts, the songs, the prayer themes, the sermon, and even the testimonies of the day must harmonize to form a single thought that must necessarily direct the congregation toward God, and all of this must contribute to achieving the objectives of the service, according to the perfect will of the Holy Spirit.

8. BE FLEXIBLE ABOUT THE FORM OF WORSHIP:

As a worship leader, be flexible during worship, as the system in place can sometimes hinder the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. My point is this: don't be trapped by your community's church system; let the Holy Spirit, the true moderator of worship, guide you according to God's perfect plan.

Even if the worship program includes a "praise time" consisting of five consecutive songs, or if you follow a liturgy where everything is pre-established, flexibility is essential to allow God's Spirit to guide the worship. Finally, to avoid falling into formality, be open to spontaneity and last-minute changes inspired by God's Spirit so that the worship unfolds according to His perfect will.

NOTE:

I believe God can inspire you on how to lead worship five days in advance, without a doubt! Or even a few minutes before or during the service. So be flexible and let the Spirit guide you. I also wanted to emphasize that the worship leader must know that flexibility then manifests itself in the freedom of a thoughtful framework, not in libertinism or spiritual wandering. It is also important to check before acting so as not to give in to disorder during worship at the expense of the freedom of the Spirit.

9. BE CREATIVE:

Don't dwell on the theological form and structure of worship; express the essentials during worship, according to the conviction of the Holy Spirit. So be creative.

Open the door. Your church system sometimes imposes monotony on you. In this teaching, I encourage you to be willing to make room for the Spirit of God, who is the creative Spirit. I believe that wherever God exists, there is always creativity and surprise. Therefore, make room for the creativity of the Holy Spirit during worship.

10. FOSTER AND ENCOURAGE NEW EXPERIENCES:

Don't be too traditional, and especially not too formal. During worship, encourage the congregation to have new experiences with God in order to foster the explosion of the Spirit in the church.

Note that one of the factors that killed past revivals was the system. When the system becomes untouchable, we risk stifling the movement of the Holy Spirit, because God is not in the system; it is religion that is in the system. God is a God of freedom, and the Spirit we have received is the Spirit of freedom, not of slavery. Therefore, do not allow yourselves to be enslaved by the system and do not let your church system block you from having new experiences with the Holy Spirit. in order to facilitate the explosion of revival in the Church.

11. DURING WORSHIP, CREATE A CELEBRATIVE ATMOSPHERE:

Leading a worship service isn't about delivering a sermon or sharing a long personal testimony. Leading a worship service is about helping the congregation celebrate their God. For every worship service in the Church is a celebration. Why? Because Jesus Christ is risen, and without his resurrection, the first Christians would not have gathered on the first day of the week, Sunday.

During worship, songs and music contribute to this festive atmosphere. For a worship service to become a celebration, it requires a smile, welcoming gestures, beautiful singing, inspiring lyrics, silence inspired by the biblical text, and smooth and appropriate transitions. I can say that an artistic touch is therefore necessary to make worship an inspiring place and foster a festive atmosphere.

12. MODERATE ACCORDING TO THE CHURCH'S VISION:

It is essential to understand the vision of the local church you are involved with before becoming a moderator. This is crucial to avoid being overly influenced by the vision of other churches. What I meant by this is that your singing style and approach must be consistent with the main vision of your local church.

It is important to understand that each church has its own way of operating. For example, the Protestant liturgy is not the same as that of Catholic worship, and you must understand yours before you begin moderating. You cannot moderate an evangelical service like a Catholic service; it will not work. Therefore, it is very important to adhere to the vision or doctrine you have adopted.

13. ADAPT TO DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES:

It is important to know how to manage different situations during worship. One of the facilitator's roles is to ensure the smooth running of the service.

A good facilitator must be very attentive to the Holy Spirit during worship and be able to perceive the atmosphere, whether good or bad, oppressive or gentle, and know how to improve or change it as quickly as possible so that everything unfolds harmoniously, in accordance with God's perfect will.

14. MAINTAIN A BALANCE BETWEEN YOUR THOUGHTS AND EMOTIONS, BETWEEN WHAT YOU THINK AND WHAT YOU EXPRESS:

Even though you are in a position to lead worship, you are not obligated to say or do everything that comes to mind. There must be a balance between your emotions, your thoughts, and what you wish to express during worship, while respecting the allotted time of the worship.

Therefore, the worship leader must be a mature Christian, able to manage their emotions and fully understand the voice of the Holy Spirit. Finally, they must be able to lead worship well.

15. DURING WORSHIP, PROVIDE MOMENTS OF SILENCE THAT ENCOURAGE LISTENING TO GOD AND REFLECTION.

It is very important to also include moments of silence during worship, but not deathly silence, but rather silence accompanied by soft music, piano music, or a biblical text that encourages reflection and listening to the Holy Spirit.

NOTE:

Above all, avoid noise, as it prevents participants from having time to reflect and focus on listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit.

16. USE BIBLICAL TEXTS AS A BASIS FOR WORSHIP:

At the beginning of the service, read a verse to guide the service and define its purpose. This text can also serve as a guide or introduction to steer the service in the right direction.

CAUTION:

During the service, do not disrupt the atmosphere by announcing that participants must read the Bible. This could create distractions or disrupt the spiritual connection already established.

If Bible verses come to mind, paraphrase or recite them to motivate the congregation to pray or to create an atmosphere conducive to the presence of the Holy Spirit. This will facilitate the outpouring of the Spirit and miracles during the service.

17. LEAD WORSHIP BY DOING YOUR PART AND EXPECTING THE HOLY SPIRIT TO WORK THROUGH WHAT YOU HAVE PREPARED:

It is important to be ready to feel the surprise of the Holy Spirit during worship. To do this, you must do your part well, and God will do the rest for the glory of His name.

18. DO WHAT YOU PLAN TO DO WITHOUT ANNOUNCING IT:

In some churches, it is considered necessary to announce in advance that hymns 879, etc., will be sung, that the title of the song will be recited, that one will pray oneself, that Sandrine will read Psalm 139, etc.

Result: The service is sometimes punctuated by numerous instructions, multiple interferences, that is, multiple words that can sometimes become unproductive and end up distracting the congregation's attention, or even blocking the action of the Holy Spirit, simply because you haven't been flexible.

Of course, instructions or explanations are sometimes useful for guiding or directing the service. But they can also be or become elements of entertainment. This is why they must be well managed with wisdom and the Holy Spirit, for example by inviting the congregation to stand or sit down, which can be done discreetly, with gentle and calm gestures, without necessarily shouting loudly into the microphone.

For leading worship is about helping the congregation feel God's presence and celebrate it with hymns, praise, and prayer. It is also about creating an atmosphere conducive to hearing God's voice during these moments of worship, which requires great flexibility on the part of worship leaders, in response to God's Spirit.

The challenge of leading worship is to facilitate communion between God and his people, through his Word and Spirit, in a spirit of prayer.

Many services miss the point because they spend too much time explaining, announcing, and so on, thus creating unnecessary distractions for the congregation. So we can avoid this and encourage people to focus more on the presence of God rather than the excitement of the show.

19. BEGIN WITH AN INTRODUCTORY PRAYER:

It is good to begin with an introductory prayer. In some congregations, someone is usually asked to recite it before the service begins. But sometimes it is better to have the moderator of the day recite it, as they are the one leading the service. If you are unsure how to recite an introductory prayer, here is an example to practice.

How do I recite a good opening prayer? Here is an example:

Lord, we come into your presence with open hearts and a desire to receive something special from you. We pray, heavenly Father, that you would open our hearts to your Word so that we may find light in your presence. Through this service, bring certainty to our doubts, answers to our questions, and the strength to live in faith and hope. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen.

20. THE HOLY SPIRIT MUST GUIDE US:

We must know that the true guide or moderator of worship par excellence is the Holy Spirit, and it is by Him that we must allow ourselves to be guided. Where the Holy Spirit guides people, the power of God is fully manifested.

The Holy Spirit must thus guide worship, and we must be ready to give Him this place in order to guide us to properly celebrate God during our services.

Hebrews 12:28-29: "Having received a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks and serve God with fear and awe, for our God is a consuming fire."
