WHAT IS HOLY COMMUNION?
Holy Communion—also known as the Eucharist or the Lord's Supper in other churches—is a Christian sacrament or ordinance that involves sharing bread and wine to commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
It is a Christian rite in which bread and wine are shared in memory of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The bread symbolizes the body of Jesus, offered as a sacrifice to save us from sin, and the wine symbolizes His blood, shed on the cross of Golgotha for the forgiveness of our sins.
THIS IS MY BODY... THIS IS MY BLOOD!!
“While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take and eat; this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.’”
— Matthew 26:26-28—
Holy Communion is a sacrament that is both solemn and commemorative; it is a source of grace and renewal in Christ. By sharing the bread and wine, we remember Christ’s sacrificial love and celebrate His victory over death, sin, sickness, and all forms of suffering.
Furthermore, participating in this meal allows the believer to solemnly reaffirm their belonging to the Body of Christ. This sharing nourishes and strengthens the unity of the spiritual Body of Jesus Christ.
MATTHEW 26:26-29
26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread; and after giving thanks, he broke it and gave it to the disciples, saying: "Take, eat; this is my body." 27 Then he took a cup; and after giving thanks, he gave it to them, saying: "Drink from it, all of you; 28 for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine from now on, until the day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom." »
1 CORINTHIANS 10:16-17
16 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a communion in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a communion in the body of Christ? 17 Since there is one bread, we who are many form one body; for we all partake of this single bread.
1 CORINTHIANS 11:23-26
24 and, after giving thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of me." 25 Likewise, after supper, he took the cup and said, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this in remembrance of me, as often as you drink it." 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
BE CAREFUL NOT TO PARTAKE IN AN UNWORTHY MANNER:
1 CORINTHIANS 11:27-34:
27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let each person examine himself, and in this way let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup; 29 for he who eats and drinks without discerning the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment upon himself. 30 That is why there are many weak and sick among you, and a great number have died. 31 If we judged ourselves, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord, so that we may not be condemned along with the world. 33 So then, my brothers, when you gather for the meal, wait for one another. 34 If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that your gathering does not bring judgment upon you. I will settle the other matters when I arrive.
HOW OFTEN TO CELEBRATE IT:
ACTS 2:42-46
They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayers.
ACTS 20:7-11
On the first day of the week, we were gathered together to break bread. Paul, who was to leave the next day, spoke with the disciples and prolonged his message until midnight.
